Rev. Ray and Pat Amos
“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” Psalm 42:1-2
We take much for granted in this life, and we are also spoiled to things like comfort, convenience, and entertainment. Everything must be compact and instantaneous or it is outdated. Technology may be making life easier, but easier seems to be coming with a high physical, moral, and spiritual price tag.
It is July, and it is hot. The perfect time for the air conditioner to quit and walk out on us, but it said, “Enough! I’m out of here.” That has sparked a lot of conversations about the days when no one had air conditioners, and we got along just fine. Oh, I remember them well, but I still would rather do my remembering where it is cool. We are missing what we took for granted.
One person said that she hadn’t had an AC in so long that she didn’t even miss it anymore. It can be that way with a church relationship. Membership Rolls have many names of once faithful members who don’t miss it anymore. I also know that many others miss it a lot. They would love to leave their place of confinement and be in a worship service, or participating in a church activity again.
The psalmist was forbidden the opportunity of worship, and he greatly missed it. He was like a thirsty deer in a drought stricken land. “Give me a drink (get me back to church) or I will die.” (Dehydration caused a lot of physical problems including hospitalization and death. It is not any different with spiritual dehydration.) We have the privilege of worship and fellowship today, yet it can be gone in a moment.
Tomorrow is the Lord’s Day. We cannot take it for granted. When they say, “Let us go to the house of the Lord, will you be glad?”
Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
