“Be careful not to do your acts of righteousness before others to be seen by them…”
Lent Day 2 (This morning I am sharing a few thoughts from our Ash Wednesday service.)
A part of Lent is about getting a certain urge under control; that deep down need to let it be known (even in the humblest way) what we have done, what sacrifice we’ve made for the Lord. Jesus noticed that some seemed to exceed in good deeds and fancy praying but something was wrong. They enjoyed the fact that people noticed their piety; all compliments were greatly appreciated. In fact, some blew the trumpet, sounded the brass, and dressed to distinguish themselves from others. Sure that was arrogant, but it was a “win, win,” for everyone: the poor got what they needed, and you got some recognition.
Then Jesus came to tell us that God didn’t like that. We get no awards banquet for practicing Lent.
Jesus takes worship beyond the assembly and out into the streets, workplace, school and home. If we are hypocrites out there, we will be hypocrites in here. If our behavior is more Christ like when it benefits us than it is at other times, we have a problem. There have been a few times over the years that I have known people who were upset because they felt like something wasn’t as good as it should have been, and they were embarrassed. Often I have heard someone ask, “What will people think?” when the question should have been, “What will the Lord think about how we are living?”
The prophet Malachi scolded the people because they would bring their sick animals to sacrifice to the Lord (and tell others that they gave their best). “Take them and offer them to the governor,” he said. “Would he accept them, would He welcome you?”
Lent suggest a possibility to us church folks: “We may not be quiet the saint that we think we are.” Lent is our annual dose of tonic for “I” trouble. The Bible warns us, “Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in you evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.” Romans 12:3 NLT
“Upon that cross of Jesus mine eye at times can see the very dying form of One who suffered there for me; and from my stricken heart with tears two wonders I confess: the wonders of redeeming love and my unworthiness.”
