Acts 20:24
DEVOTION FOR TODAY, August 12, 2019
“… my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me.”
It is Race Week at Bristol. The roads leading to the track are broad and many will be upon them. Those who live in the area will have to use back roads that are narrow if they want to get home. Does that sound familiar?
In 1994 we went to the spring race. Everyone knew that Mark Martin was going to win it. No one was close enough to pass him on the last lap. Then something happened. It wasn’t a wreck or a breakdown. He got his signals confused and thought the race was over. Instead of going toward the finish line, he headed toward victory lane: The first became last.
Paul wrote to the Christians at Galatia, “You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth?” Christian friends, it doesn’t matter how well we have run this race. We must faithfully run today and tomorrow if we intend to cross the finish line.
The Bible instructs us to throw off everything that hinders, and the sin that so easily entangles us; And to run with perseverance the race marked out for each one of us. It is also important that we run the race while keeping our eyes on Jesus.
The writer of Ecclesiastes realized that the race is not to the swift. He was right, it is to the faithful. Who doesn’t want to give up on some days? That is when we run with painful determination.
When Paul saw the checkered flag he said, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Then, the Lord said, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
