NEW YEARS EVE

Once again Father Time is turning over his duties to the New Year baby. When I see that image I think about the baby Jesus in the arms of Simeon as the old saint prays, “Lord, now let me depart in peace…” We do pass the mantle along to those who come behind; but not usually until we have done some of life’s work together.

In the Bible, Caleb was ready for a new challenge, a new adventure; he had been promised the hill territory as a possession, and he was “chomping at the bit” to claim it. He said, “Today I am eighty-five years old, and I am just as strong now as I was at age forty (when the land was promised), therefore give me this mountain!” Joshua 14:12

Let the old and young work together side by side. It is the Lord who called us to the task, and let it be the Lord who tells us when it is time to let go of the plow. If only the old do the work of the church we may become “Set in our ways.” If only the young do the work we may become “unset in our ways.” Together there is a balance, and God’s will is better understood when we love, and listen, and work, in unity and peace with God. Why not mix the wisdom of age, and the eagerness of youth, in the same pot?

I look at much of our Christianity today, and it appears that we have stopped mountain climbing. Christians will never fail because there is no promise from God. If we fail it is because we lost our vision, our hope, and our spiritual energy. Don’t let the dust settle on our heart. Young or old: We can show the world what God can do at any age. Together we can face 2025 and pray to our Lord above, “Give me this mountain!”

“Father, let me dedicate
All this year to Thee,
In whatever worldly state
Thou wilt have me be:
Not from sorrow, pain, or care
Freedom dare I claim;
This alone shall be my prayer,
Glorify Thy Name.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray.
