“NO PLACE LIKE HOME”

“Be it ever so humble, there is no place like home.”
The house was old and worn with years. The furniture didn’t match, there was no internet or cable, but neither was there TV or computer. There was electricity, but not tonight; a blizzard had caused a blackout for miles around; and it would be days before it was restored.

The evening was pleasant in spite of the storm. The old Warm Morning stove was faithful, food in the cellar was plentiful, and the oil lamp never failed. Some called the family poor, but they weren’t. That night they were even the envy of some who lived in bigger houses with all the convenience of modern life.

In this life there are some things that sooner or later we will be glad that we kept even though some think that they are outdated. The Bible is still a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. I have lived my life with good people who live by it, and it has proven trustworthy. When the things that we have depended on fail and the artificial lights of our wisdom are dark; blessed are the ones who still believe the Bible.

Keep the great hymns of faith. We have a communion service in a local nursing home once a month. I watch my friend’s countenance transfigure as they sing the songs of their faith. For a moment they go back to the church of their memories. If the grand hymns cease, then what will we sing when reach our days of lengthening shadows?

Never give up on prayer. A few years ago we worried about prayer being taken out of school; today it seems to be removed from many homes, and even churches. “Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged, Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness, take it to the Lord in prayer.

When the storms of life are raging,
Stand by me (stand by me);
When the world is tossing me
Like a ship upon the sea
Thou Who rulest wind and water,
Stand by me (stand by me).”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
