Ecclesiastes 3:12
DEVOTION FOR TODAY, March 25, 2020
“I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice and to do good in one’s lifetime…”
Ralph Cushman had a unique walk with God. He could see the Lord in every situation; and then put the glory and joy of it in words. He once said, “I know there are heart-aches, a world full of strife, but thank God, O Thank God, Thank God just for life.” It must have been a morning like this when he wrote about his friend, Jonnie Wren:
“Singing through the rain! We heard him while the clouds hung dark about.
And no ray of morning sunshine cheered our world within, without…
Jonnie Wren, I thank God for you! In this world so full of pain, May the kind Lord give me courage to go singing in the rain.”
People greet the rain like they do a surprise guest; some with open arms, and others with grumbling words. Life (good and bad) is often like the rain; it comes with a “ready or not.”
I’ve searched the gospels through, and there’s something you will never find: our Lord never said a mumbling word, no not ever. He knew who made the days, and he rejoiced in each one.
Yesterday I passed a young family on the walk, and I asked, “How are you doing with all this craziness.” She just pointed up, and he said with sincere words, “It is all in the hands of the Lord.” It was starting to rain and they walked on with a friendly smile and a “Have a good day.”
May the kind Lord give us all courage to go singing in the rain.
