Genesis 22:12

DEVOTION FOR TODAY, August 8, 2019

“…now I know that you truly fear God…”

The Lord spoke those words to Abraham on a mountain top when he proved the depth of his love and trust for God. “Now I know.” Those words are wondering words for me. We serve a God who knows all that is knowable. It is not yet known if I will be faithful throughout this day. This morning I type these words with the hope of being true to the Lord; the setting of the sun will write the “Amen” of the day, and will answer the question, “Have I done my best for Jesus?”

“Now I know.” How does the Lord know that we love Him? It is not always recorded in our deeds. Paul wrote that all our talk about love can be a noisy gong and clanging cymbal; and that our missions of good deeds will come to nothing if we do them without love. Self-proclaimed morality has a way of hiding the empty space in a heart where Love should dwell.

Love goes deeper than our actions. A beautiful flower is more than its bloom; without a hidden root it is nothing. Love always has hidden roots and it is there where God knows if we fear Him. He looks at roots; not just the bloom. “Dear Lord, Please tell me, ‘Do you know that I love you?”

One of my favorite songs that first came to my ears and heart in childhood:

“I wonder, have I done my best for Jesus,
Who died upon the cruel tree?
To think of His great sacrifice at Calvary,
I know my Lord expects the best from me…”

“Now I know.” Way down in the secret place of our heart where only the Savior can see: What does He know?”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
