John 16:33

DEVOTION FOR TODAY, September 4, 2020

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Inevitable; why is that word usually used in a negative context? War is inevitable, troubles and taxes are, so are sickness and death; and now we throw Covid-19 into the unavoidable box.

As I pondered the subject, I felt a gentle chastisement from the Holy Spirit: Inevitable is not a bad word. Even though I cannot find it written the Bible it is on almost every page.

No matter how bad things got in the world it was inevitable that He would send His Son to redeem it on Calvary’s cross. It is because of the death and resurrection of Jesus that the word inevitable has become a beautiful and comforting word.

Because of Calvary we can know that Peace is inevitable. The Bible has promised a day when swords will be made into plowshares and people will study war no more. The old spiritual says, “I’m so glad that troubles don’t last always.” It is inevitable that the tears of the long night will give way to the joy of a new morning. It is also inevitable that death will be no more; and the dead in Christ will live for an eternity.

Because of the pandemic we have been unable to have our monthly communion services at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. We miss our friends there. (If not being able to attend church services has got us down; then we might have a little more empathy for our friends in nursing homes.) There is a song that we always sing in every service. They sing it with so much feeling and power because they know the inevitable that everything is going to be alright. This is their song:

“There is coming a day,
When no heart aches shall come,
No more clouds in the sky,
No more tears to dim the eye,
All is peace forever more,
On that happy golden shore,
What a day, glorious day that will be.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
