“He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.” Psalm 121:3-4
People say that if the Lord is going to stay awake, then they are going to sleep because there is no point in everyone staying up. That sounds okay, but it isn’t realistic; at least, not for most people. The psalmist often speaks of tearful and restless nights. The Apostle Paul wrote about nights of sleeplessness; and many of us have had our own.
I am often with people that have great love and faith in God, yet they have swollen eyes and broken hearts. It is clear that they are not getting much sleep. They are better to be encouraged by knowing that God sits up with them when they feel the dark of loneliness and fear of the approaching day.
When little children are sleepless we sit with them, hold them, sing to them and comfort them to sleep. How much more will our Heavenly Father do the same for us? If we can do something to give rest to a weary soul, our Lord expects us to do it; and never are we to sin against God by deliberately creating sleepless nights for another person.
The Bible says, “It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he gives his beloved sleep.” Sleeplessness is not God’s will for anyone.
“When I’m worried and I can’t sleep, I count my blessings instead of sheep, and I fall asleep counting my blessings. When my bankroll is getting small, I think of when I had none at all and I fall asleep counting my blessings.”
