Rebuilding and Restoring

“They said to me, “…The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire. When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.”

Nehemiah 1:3-4

When things are impossible for us, we have a choice to either give up, or go to the one with whom all things are possible. Nehemiah wept and prayed because the walls of Jerusalem were destroyed. Then, God put him to that task of rebuilding. That was something bigger than he could ever do by himself.

It once was a common thought among Christians that we should be doing work assigned by the Lord that requires more than we have, and is bigger than we can do by ourselves. That keeps us from the sin of self-reliance when we should be leaning on the Lord.

Despite the interference of enemies and mockers, the wall was rebuilt in record time. What do the spiritual walls around our homes look like? Are we surrounded and protected by faith, prayer, Christian love and goodness?

Perhaps it is time for some rebuilding. Time to get our faith up to date, our prayer life revived, and fresh fruit of the Spirit back on the table. “Dear Lord, restore to us the joy, and the glory, of your salvation. Amen”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
