“Seeing Jesus More Clearly”

One of my greatest treasures is all the people who have helped me to see Jesus more clearly through everyday experiences. Early in our marriage, Pat’s Father tried to teach me how to plow behind a horse. He did not realize it, but he was helping me experience a part of a Bible story that would never happen in a seminary classroom.

“The kingdom of God is like a treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys the field.” Matthew 13:44

By the sweat of his brow the man was plowing in the heat of the sun. For years he had labored in another man’s field and dreamed of a day when he could offer his family a better life. His dreams faded a little more each day with another sunset.

There was a sudden jerk of the plow. He had hit something. “What was it?” Buried in the field was hidden treasure from years gone by. (It often happened that valuables were buried when invading armies were coming. Then, if the family survived, they would retrieve it and start over. If they did not survive, then it became lost treasure.) He went home and sold everything he had, then he bought the field with its treasure. “Life has strange and wonderful turns,” he thought, “all these years of working this field, and it was here all the time.”

We labor through life with our hopes and dreams. It sometimes seems like we do a lot of plowing with little results. The enemy invades our lives and we too need a start over treasure. Then it happens one day. We discover the true treasure that turns all of life around, and his name is Jesus. His love is worth our all, and He was, and is, there all the time. Have you discovered life’s greatest treasure? The gospel song is true:

“Time after time I was searching for peace in some void. I was trying to blame all my ills on this world I was in. Surface relationships used me till I was done in. And all the time someone was waiting to free me from sin. He was there all the time. He was there all the time. Waiting patiently in line; he was there all the time.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
