Spring of Water

“…but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:14

Grace, like water, flows to the lowest point. We are a success oriented society that often measures a successful person as one who makes it to the top, and has the most of everything good, and the least of life’s hardships. Life isn’t that way for anyone. The truth is that we all live by the same grace that flows like a river from the throne of God. In an odd way it is our failures, and our need for each other, that proves the grace of God.

Aunt Clara had a springhouse on the porch outside her kitchen door. Good cold mountain water poured freely from a pipe into a crock. There was a dipper hanging on a nail beside it. Everyone drank from the same dipper and just hung it back on the nail. I don’t think that anyone ever got sick from it, but I know that people said, “That’s good!”
The crock then overflowed into a trough and flowed around more crocks in the springhouse. Everything was kept cold (No refrigerator needed. She didn’t have electricity anyway.) That water flowed outside down a long piece of gutter into a large tub for the cows to drink from.

Jesus told a thirsty and broken woman that He could make a spring of living (running) water to begin in her, causing her soul to never thirst again. Suddenly a life that was dry and weary came alive and overflowed into other people. Then they too came to Jesus for this water; and were satisfied.

Overflowing Waters of Grace is a Gospel Theme. Jesus often spoke of the life that He gives in terms of FULL and RUNNING OVER. There is no half-filled believer: We either have it, or we don’t; and if we have, we have it in abundance and spilling over.
We all have stood downstream from those wonderful people whose Christian Love and kindness have overflowed and blessed our weary souls. The waters of grace are shared waters that come from God’s never ending supply. We all drink from the same dipper; and we say, “God is good.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
