“Take Off the Old Coat and Put on the New”

“The angel said to those who were standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes.” And to him he said, ‘See, I have taken your guilt away from you, and I will clothe you with festal apparel.” Zechariah 3:4

Joshua the high priest was standing before the angel of the Lord looking as though he had been plucked from the devil’s fire. He was in filthy clothes, and Satan was pointing out all his sins. He was too filthy to serve God.

The devil is always ready to point out our sins. By doing so he discourages us; and attempts to disqualify us for being useful to the Lord.

The Lord once said to not call unclean what he had made clean. The devil has no claim on our life after we have been forgiven and redeemed by the Savior. Somewhere I read these words: “I hear the accuser roar of evils I have done. I know them all, and thousands more. Hallelujah, Jehovah finds none.”

Dirty clothes represent the guilt that we carry when we have sinned. Clean garments represent what our Heavenly Father does for us. He takes away our sin and guilt; and then clothes us in new life. No one grows out of soiled rags; they must be put off before the new can be put on. There is an old song that a few folks still know:

“Two coats were before me
An old and a new
I asked my sweet master
Oh what must I do

The old coat was ugly
So tattered and torn
The other a new one
Had never been worn

I’ll tell you the best thing
I ever did
I took off the old coat
And put on the new.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
