2 Timothy 1:5

“…I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.”

A little girl had just walked out the church door with her doll. I asked her the doll’s name, and told her I was glad that she brought her friend to church. A woman whose life had passed the ninety year mile marker was next. She asked, “Preacher, do you know why I like seeing little girls carry their dolls to church?” I asked her why, and she answered, “When they grow up and have children of their own, I think that they will bring them to church too.”

Paul wrote to young Timothy who was living in a world that wasn’t much different from ours. There were some who were trying to rewrite the gospel to suit themselves. Timothy was encouraged to hold on to the true Gospel, and keep preaching it, no matter what the rest of the people did.”

A part of his encouragement was to remember who had taught him the truth from a child up. There will always be plenty to challenge our faith. There will be experts in the Scriptures to tell you that you have been “taught wrong.” I agree with Paul, he was a true believer: “Remember from whom you learned it.”

Some say that there are many interpretations to a scripture. That may be so, but there is only one truth. When it comes to life’s truth, I will accept it from the one who genuinely loves God, and loves others. I am thankful for everyone who has told me the stories of Jesus from childhood up.

A young man told me that he wanted to join the church. I asked him about his faith, and he simply put his hand on his uncle’s shoulder. That Saint of God had nurtured his nephew’s faith. There I looked into the tearful and humble eyes of a man with his Bible in his hands, and its words in his heart. And there standing in his footsteps was the young man who had followed him from childhood up; and God said, “AMEN.”

This morning I write in memory of Richard Grindstaff who was that faithful uncle, saint, friend, prayer warrior, encourager, and Christian mentor for a multitude of God’s children. “…and their works do follow them.”
