Genesis 8:9

“…the dove found no resting place for her foot.”

When Noah wanted to see if the flood waters were going down, he sent out a dove. It flew and flew, but found no place to land. The tired little bird had to keep flying until it returned to the ark. It must have been so weary, and yet relieved to see the hand of Noah reaching out the window to welcome it home.

Do you ever feel like that little bird? You have been going and going, doing and doing, and just want to rest your feet and soul for a little while, but there is no resting place. Don’t give up because the Ark of God is always within reach.

Noah stood at the window and watched; and God is watching and waiting for His children to come home. We may be tired and weary, even dirty and guilty, but that doesn’t matter to Him; God just wants His children to come home. For several years now I have received the same prayer request each month from the same person. It is always the same: “Pray that (name) will come home.”

We are set free to go where we wish, and do whatever freedom allows in this world. Love cannot be forced, and if we are going to love God we must first be set free like Noah’s dove. God lets us go like the prodigal son’s Father did for him; but always with a hope that when the world cannot fill the emptiness of the heart, then the little dove will remember home.

If you feel like you have been gone too long, and you are just too tired to get back; there is good news. God is standing near the window; and His arms are reaching out to you.

Perhaps the Gospel Song says it best: “There’s a light in the window, and the table’s set in splendor; someone’s standing by the open door. I can see a crystal river, oh I must be near forever; and I’ve never been this homesick before… Oh this lonesome heart is crying; think I’ll spread my wings for flying; Lord, I’ve never been this homesick before.” Whoever, and wherever you are; Come Home!
