The Fragrance of Worship
“Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.”
Mark 14:6
Holy week begins this Sunday. My mind cannot begin to imagine what that must have been like for Jesus. It would be a time of receiving extreme love from a few; and bitter rejection from others. There would also be what was perhaps the hardest of all: the confusion of his friends.
We witness what it is like for media (including social media) to rip people apart like a devouring lion. Jesus certainly had enough of that kind of thing to happen to him. He also received an act of genuine love that went to the depth of his heart when Mary anointed his feet with a costly perfume.
Of course, the act was criticized (that’s the way life goes), but what others complained about, Jesus said would always be lovingly remembered in Heaven. Sometimes you just must follow your heart and give a few roses to the living. Jesus said, “She has anointed me for my burial.” It meant a lot to Jesus; helped get him through the week. If she had waited to take flowers to the tomb on Sunday; it would have been too late because the grave was empty.
The fragrance of worship filled the entire house. I guess we can either bring an aroma to worship, or just be a stinker. We all can make the world a better place if we live and love as if each day may be our last opportunity. What are we doing that will be remembered in Heaven?
Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
