Song of Solomon 2:1

“The little foxes that spoil the vine.”

We live in a world of addictions. How many people have had their world to shatter, and then say, “I wish that I had never taken that first (you can fill in the blank)? Christ was born for this: to help us be set free, and to get our life back.

While visiting with friends at a rehab for wild animals in North Carolina I was holding an Egyptian fox. It was very small, with big pointed ears. I held it on my chest and was petting it when my friend told me that it had teeth like a razor. He also said that he was surprised that it was letting me hold it because it had an ill temper. That was when I decided to put him back in the cage. I started to lift him away and he started to growl. Those eyes that I thought were cute started to look real mean. He would not let me put him back.

“Little foxes spoil the vine.” Those sharp teeth could bite through the vine and cut it in pieces. They could destroy a vineyard. Do you know that Christians are like vines in the Lord’s vineyard, and little foxes can destroy us also?

A look, a thought, then an action can seem so little and manageable, but it can quickly spoil a life, or a marriage, and a family. Little innocent sins soon show their razor sharp teeth, and then when you try to put them out of your life they growl and threaten to harm you if you do.

It is best not to take that first step down that destructive path. The “I can handle it” attitude has been the great destroyer of many. My friend had to take the fox from me; it would not let me put it down. We have a Friend who can take the destructive fox of sin from us. Do not carry your sin and guilt another day. Jesus can set us free, and we are then free indeed!

The hymn says, “Heal me, hands of Jesus, and search out all my pain; Restore my hope, remove my fear, and bring me peace again. Know me, mind of Jesus, and show me all my sin; Dispel the memories of guilt, and bring me peace within.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
