Joshua 14:12
“Today I am eighty-five years old, and I am just as strong now as I was at age forty (when the land was promised), therefore give me this mountain!”
“THE OLD AND YOUNG CLIMB MOUNTAINS TOGETHER”
Once again Father Time has turned over his duties to the New Year baby. When I see that image, I think about the baby Jesus in the arms of Simeon as the old saint prays, “Lord, now let me depart in peace…” We do pass the mantle along to those who come behind; but usually not until we have shared some of life’s work together.
In the Bible, Caleb was ready for a new challenge, a new adventure; he had been promised the hill territory as a possession, and he was “chomping at the bit” to claim it. He said, “Today I am eighty-five years old, and I am just as strong now as I was at age forty (when the land was promised), therefore give me this mountain!” Joshua 14:12
Let the old and young work together side by side. It is the Lord who called us to the task, and let it be the Lord who tells us when it is time to let go of the plow. If only the old do the work of the church, we may become “Set in our ways.” If only the young do the work, we may become “unset in our ways.” Together there is a balance, and God’s way will be better understood when we love, and listen, and work, in unity and peace together with God. Why not mix the wisdom of age, and the eagerness of youth, in the same pot?
In today’s Christianity it appears that we have stopped mountain climbing. Christians will never fail because there is no promise from God. If we fail it is because we lost our vision, our hope, and our spiritual energy. We must not allow the dust to settle on our soul. Young or old: We can show the world what God can do with willing and faithful hearts. Together we can pray in 2023, “Give me this mountain!”
Grace and Peace, Rev Ray.
