“The Pond of Self-Pity”

There is a public and popular fishing spot in many communities. A person would wonder why because not one good fish has ever come out of it. There is also a strange phenomenon associated with it: Even if there are a hundred people fishing, only one person is there. Most of us have been that one at some time or another.

When you fish in that spot be sure and wear your boots. The banks are very muddy; and some people get stuck in it for a long time. I am talking about the pond of self-pity.

The bait is usually our aches and pains, troubles, and woes. If you are asked what you are fishing with, you had better be ready to hear about the bait they are using. It is guaranteed to outdo yours. And of course, there are the fish: About the only thing you will catch in this pool of murky water is a mess of “Bless Your Hearts.” (Not much meat on their bones.)

I know that this is facetious, but it is also true to life. In our efforts to be like Jesus we must cast this dangerous robber of life aside. Think about it; from a human standpoint Jesus had every right to self-pity, yet there was not even a tiny hint of such. He faced Calvary’s Cross with boldness; not once did he ask, “Why me?” Neither did he throw it in anyone’s face. We never heard him say, “After all I did for you, it looks like you would be grateful.”

It is amazing that he never mentioned how painful the crucifixion was. There was no “chewing out the disciples” for letting him down. There was just the Love of a cheerful giver who believed that it was worth it all.

“Let this same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 2:5

“It will be worth it all when we see Jesus,
Life’s trials will seem so small when we see Christ;
One glimpse of His dear face all sorrow will erase,
So bravely run the race till we see Christ.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
