Genesis 4:26
DEVOTION FOR TODAY, November 7, 2020
“And as for Seth, to him a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the Lord.”
The verse above is the first mention of people calling on the name of the Lord. “Enosh” means man in his weakness. It is in weakness that we are often driven to our knees in prayer. We are a society that puts great value in strength and the ability to stand on our own. That is all well and good, but there is a great danger that comes with it. We can be tempted to believe that we can manage life simply fine by ourselves; that we are smart enough and strong enough to not need God.
The weight of this world is too much for our weak human foundation, and the sooner we realize that the better it is for us. No matter how strong any of us think we are; somewhere out there is that proverbial straw that is too much for the camel’s back. Why wait until the load gets that heavy?
Weakness is a good thing when it brings us to our knees. The Apostle Paul had plenty to boast about, but he chose to boast about his weaknesses. He wrote, “For when I am weak, I am strong.” That was when he depended on the strength of the Lord. Our greatest strength is to call on, and lean on, Jesus. We can lean on His everlasting arms and trust the nail scarred hands that do all things well.
“Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care? Jesus knows our every weakness, take it to the Lord in prayer.”
