Deuteronomy 23:12

“You shall have a place outside the camp, and you shall go out to it…” Deuteronomy 23:12

How does a person write a devotional on this subject? It was a place familiar to many of us. The path leading to it was sometimes a stroll, and other times you couldn’t get there fast enough. There, on that piece of ground, was a place of great contemplation, problem solving, and sometimes just a getaway from other folks.

It was for some a place of quiet rest; and a few folks could stay a long time, even read a book. One thing was for certain, it was as necessary as daily life itself.

There have been those who would rather be miserable than go there; a few people have been miserable enough to go anyway. Some who read this simply have no clue about the place; while others have been well acquainted. It’s a little building with a wooden seat and in the winter no heat; there is a wood button lock on the door, and cracks in the floor.

The truth is that we can sanitize our Christianity to the extent that it seems to have no benefit to those we are trying to get rid of sin and come clean with God. Faith can be messy because our lives can be. The washing away of sin is dirty business.

Some people would rather be miserable than get alone with God and humble themselves. Others are ready for whatever it takes to get their life back. Even prayer is a daily path that sometimes is a stroll; and other days we can’t get there fast enough; but for the Christian it is as necessary as daily life itself.

“What can wash away my sin? Nothing, but the blood of Jesus.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
