“What Is Heaven Like”

A little newborn baby was brought home from the hospital and was sleeping in a bassinet. His little sister ran up and looked in and said, “Please, tell me before you forget, What is Heaven like?” The pure and holy do seem to get quickly lost and forgotten in our world.

I remember a winter in Bluefield when the church’s nativity was covered by snow that was falling, snow on snow. We knew that baby Jesus was there, even though we could no longer see him. That is okay for an outdoor nativity scene, but our relationship with Christ should never be snowed under.

The devil has many tools in his box that are very effective, and one is “busyness.” It demands so much attention that the truly important matters get pushed aside, and often forgotten. So many people are saying that they will be glad when Christmas is over. It is not the Grinch that is out to steal Christmas; Jesus said that it is the wolf (the devil) that comes to steal.

Little baby in the manger, tell us what God is like. Our world can be like the hymn: “In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter, long ago.” To a cold hard world you gave your Son.

What is God Like? God is Love; a love that came down at Christmas; and love that would die because God came to give life in abundance. He is also the endless love that refused to stay in a grave. God is a giver of all good things; and Christmas is about giving, “For God so loved the world He gave…” Now, what can we give back to our Lord?

We join the lonely voice of the song: “What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; if I were a Wise Man, I would do my part; yet what can I give him; I give him my heart.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
