John 6:68

DEVOTION FOR TODAY, August 27, 2019

“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

I have long appreciated the late Peter Marshall’s sermon, “The Keeper of the Springs.” He described a quaint town by a stream where the citizens shared a serene life. On the mountain above town lived a man called the keeper of the springs. He was paid a token amount to keep the springs clean that supplied the water to the town.

There had never been a problem until someone questioned if the man was really doing the job. He was fired, and an expensive water purification system was built, but it didn’t work, and soon polluted water barely flowed through town bringing stench and sickness. The town leaders went back up the mountain and rehired the keeper of the springs; then clear water was flowing again.

It’s not a new thing. There have always been those who rise up out of the ranks of faith and begin to question the Invisible God. It doesn’t seem to matter that the evidence of His existence and faithfulness is clearly all around.

The good news is that God can’t be fired, and that He is long-suffering. It happens: Our critical minds can cause us serious problems when we question the existence of God, and the truth of the Bible. It may take a while for the pollution to make its way into our life, but it will come. I choose to accept the Bible on its own merits, to read its simplicity and believe that it is the inerrant word of God.

I don’t know about you but some of my days can sure get tangled up. I need one dependable North Star for my soul; and I have found it in the Bible. Some will mock our Blessed Savior, but let us give Him praise. Where would we go if we left you Lord? You alone know the way through this wilderness, and the road that takes us home.

“To mock your reign, O dearest Lord,
they made a crown of thorns;
set you with taunts along that road
from which no one returns.
They could not know, as we do now,
how glorious is that crown;
that thorns would flower upon your brow,
your sorrows heal our own.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
