“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” Revelation 3:20

There is no door that Jesus is afraid to knock on. It doesn’t matter what the path looks like that is leading to it. No heart is too unwelcoming and cold that He will not try to make friends. Today’s text is about a people who have a door that is closed while an honored guest stands outside. “If anyone will hear my voice and open the door…”

The opening and closing of doors is a frequent subject in the Bible. The first mention of a door is Genesis 4:7. In that passage there is no one knocking, but sneaking. “…sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you…” Who would open the door to a crouching person? Sin will never knock at our door because it can’t stand upright with integrity and goodwill. It will crouch, sneak, and even disguise itself, but never show itself for what it really is.

It is Christ who knocks and calls out to us. He comes because sin has already gotten inside our lives. Jesus is the only exterminator of evil, guilt and shame. If anyone will let Him in they will truly rejoice in their newfound guest. Behold, He stands tall and knocking with a heart of love.

The last time that a door is mentioned in the Bible is in Revelation 4:1.
It is an open door to Heaven with a clear invitation to “Come up here.” Certainly there are places that are grand that will never open their doors for us. Other doors are always open and inviting because of a relationship or friendship with the ones who live there; or because it is home.

If we want an open door to Heaven, then let us make sure that our door is open to Christ on earth. There are some doors that are closed to faith, but there are other doors that we control: The one to our heart, our home, and our church; no doubt there are others. Even so, come in Lord Jesus.

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
