Proverbs 19:2b

“…whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way.”

I know all too well the stress of chasing the clock, of trying to be two different places at one time; and the frustration of “Hurry up and wait.” Living on a street that is heavy with school traffic, I am made to realize what a rushed world we live in. Cars speed by, parents and children argue (probably about someone being late for something); and the day is just beginning. How long has it been since you spent a little unrushed time with God?

I know of no place in the gospels where Jesus rushed. He always maintained a calm and steady pace. Even if He didn’t arrive at a place as quickly as some people wanted Him to, He was never too late for the glory of God to be revealed. Could we learn a few things about the pace of life from Him? In whatever we have to do today, we should endeavor to do it in a calm, collected, and prayerful state of mind.

Have you ever gotten in such a spiritual hurry that you ran ahead of Jesus instead of walking with him? Sometimes we need to get back in the zone of “Slow down and pray.” Solomon had learned that whoever makes haste may miss their way and become lost in the clutter of life.

Patience and calmness was once taught in child rearing, but a fast pace world has taken that away. When we are outwardly excited and our spirit is “hot” about something we should cease to act. When we have heard the Holy Spirit within, then we can act with calmness while knowing this is the way to walk with God.

Longfellow wrote, “Holy Spirit-Peace divine! Still this restless heart of mine; Speak to calm this tossing sea, Stayed in Thy tranquility.”
