“Sincere Prayer”
“Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard.” 1 Samuel 1:13
I feel strongly led to spend a little time studying Hannah’s praying in 1 Samuel, chapter one. She is desperate in prayer. It is as though her knees kneel on the earth, and her hands reach through the window of Heaven. I have witnessed such praying in my lifetime, perhaps not enough.
A sincere prayer comes from the heart. It does not require spoken words because it is our heart, not our tongue, which speaks to the Lord. Although the priest could not hear Hannah’s words, God understood her perfectly. We have no one who can connect us with the Father but Jesus, our Great High Priest.
She was determined to connect with God. Without uttering a sound, God heard and granted her plea. He once asked Moses, “Why are you crying out to me?” (Exodus 15:12) Have we given God reason to ask us that question?
Hannah did reach God, and being satisfied that she had done what she could, she left it in His hands and went on with faith. Having begun with fasting and heaviness of heart, she arose cheerfully in confidence that all was well.
Hannah’s situation remained unchanged for a while, but she trusted God’s timing. The life of faith has great comfort in the promises that God makes. Not one shall be unfulfilled.
“Thou art coming to a King,
large petitions with thee bring,
for his grace and power are such,
none can ever ask too much.”
1 Samuel 1:13
