“Lord, it is good for us to be here.” Matthew 17:4
There is a nine mile stretch between Bluefield Virginia and the town of Pocahontas Virginia. As you travel the road you drive in and out of West Virginia. I find that the boundaries between Heaven and Earth are something like that. We travel an earthly highway that passes in and out of the Heavenly Way every now and then. If we did not have those moments when Heaven would come down and meet with us, the journey would become more than we could bear.
This Sunday many congregations will consider the Transfiguration of Christ. That truly was a Heaven and Earth moment; and it terrified the disciples. The fear seemed to be more about where the moment was taking them. They clearly did not want to go there; but followers of Christ go where they don’t really want to go sometimes, even if it involves a discomforting cross.
New roads can cause the heart to beat faster and knees to shake. I stand at the altar with a fidgeting groom in front of me. His “I got this” attitude has run off and left him standing there. A beautiful bride graces down the aisle toward us. This walk that has begun with the chiming of the hour causes me to wonder and pray; “Lord, where are they going?”
The Highway of life has many exits that take us down new roads; and new roads are both exciting and fearful. Sometimes we just want to say, “Lord, why not let us stay right where we are?” We have all been there, and will be there again: Looking into an unknown path that bids us come and walk with God. “Where are we going Lord?” He doesn’t always tell us. It isn’t nearly as important that we know where we are going as it is to know who we are going with.
Whatever your path today; you do not walk alone.
Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
