The Lord Knows Us All by our Name
“Go and lie down,” he said to Samuel, “and if He calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for Your servant is listening.” 1st Samuel 3:9
It was a sad time for the people of God; Eli, the priest, wasn’t listening to the Lord, and the Lamp of God in the Temple was going out. That probably meant that it was late night, but it also seemed like the light was going out in the soul of the people. “Go ahead and sleep Eli, I will talk to the child.”
“Samuel!” The voice was so audible that young Samuel thought it was Eli calling. Eli sent him back to bed with instructions to answer God: “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.” Finally, someone on earth heard God.
In times like these we many need a revival of listening to God. Our Lord spoke on several occasions about the human ability to not hear what we are hearing, “In one ear and out the other,” is what we call it.
God has much to say if we will listen. The scripture that tells us to “Be still and know that I am God” has come to our attention several times lately. The young child taught us how to hear God.
He waited in anticipation, believing that God would call his name again. The Lord said, “I have called you by your name…” What a wonderful thought, the Lord knows us all by our name.
Samuel also knew who was speaking and he called Him Lord. A voice from Heaven once said, “This is my Son, listen to him.” That voice is also for you and me.
Samuel knew his place: “Your servant is listening.” Servants are always better at hearing than those caught up in themselves. He listened, he heard, and he obeyed. What would the world be like today if we would do the same?
“Make me a servant, humble and meek
Lord, let me lift up those who are weak
And may the prayer of my heart always be
Make me a servant
Make me a servant
Make me a servant today”
