Lucy was philosophizing, and Charlie Brown was taking it all in. She begins by saying, “Life is like a deck chair on a ship. Some place it so they can see where they are going; and others to see where they have been; and some just want it to be in a place where they can see where they are right now. Then Charlie Brown sighs, “I can’t even get mine unfolded.”

That is the story for many of us. For some people things seem to always be easy and smooth. For most of us things can get complicated in a hurry. The children of Israel finally escape Egypt and found themselves caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. Magi use a star for a GPS and lose their signal for a little while in Jerusalem. Disciples go to supper with their Lord and he ends up crucified.

There is no way to escape it, life gets complicated and seemingly impossible. That is another reason to be glad that Jesus walks with us. He sees the path that we do not realize, even if it is right through the middle of the sea. He can make a way for you and me.

Remember that the people got across the Red Sea, the Magi found Jesus, and Christ has been raised to unending life. We know that life is much more than the unfolding of a chair; We also believe that our Lord knows the way through the wilderness; all we must do is follow. No one who puts his/her trust in God will be disappointed.

“Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim through this barren land.
I am weak, but Thou art mighty;
Hold me with Thy powerful hand.”
